Terry Stiles was two weeks into grade 11 when he announced to his parents that he was moving to Winnipeg to play rock n roll.
That was in the early 60’s and Stiles was playing in an emerging local band called the Tempests along with Wayne Faulconer, Wayne Cardinal, John Karwacki and George Jones.
Their newly acquired manager recommended the move, so the group – now with Russ Percy in the lineup - changed their name and headed for the City as Satan and the D-Men.
There they lived in a rented house, donned red capes for performances and, for five years, pursued their musical dreams.
Satan and the D-Men played dances, weddings and night clubs. They cut a single for Eagle Records, appeared on a television show called Hi Jinks, played the Cavalcade of Stars and toured with Buddy Knox.
But in spite of their musical success other pressures became too much to overcome and band members went their separate ways.
Then in 1982, they reunited to raise money for the Kenora Thistles. The event was a hit and now the D-Men (as they’ve renamed themselves) reunite regularly for local causes including the Kenora and Keewatin branch public libraries.
Stiles says the band has helped raise upwards of $100,000 in the community through more than two dozen reunion concerts. “We just love doing it,” he said, “We just love playing.”
And their fans love it too. At the band’s last two Harbourfest appearances, they drew upwards of 1000 people for each show.
On July 3rd, the D-Men and Friends will take to the stage at the Keewatin Memorial Arena.
For this performance, Stiles, Percy, Faulconer and Jones will be joined by Carol Pominville on bass and Sherman Murphy on drums.
The Friends are guest performers Pat Brett, Kelly Gibson, Greg Lowe, Lippy Lindstrom, Darcy Ura and Sean Mundy.
Tickets are on sale now for $15 at both libraries, B & B General Store, Two Bears Marina, Sure Thing Enterprises, HoJoe’s, Johnson’s Pharmacy & Kenora Home & Cottage Realty. The dance starts at 8 pm.
